Gitarzysta Tom Brooke i perkusista Tuomas Kainulainen współtworzą NYOS od ponad dekady i nie brakuje im energii, by wciąż zaskakiwać słuchaczy. O nowych pomysłach opowiedział mi krótko, ale konkretnie :)
Między Uchem A Mózgiem: Gdy słucham NYOS widzę tęczę. Zapytałam Cię przy okazji poprzedniego wywiadu o synestezję, więc spójrzmy teraz z nieco innej perspektywy - jak czujesz, który kolor pasuje najbardziej do albumu "Growl"?
Tom Brooke: Szczerze - myślę, że ta tęcza najbardziej tu pasuje. Nie da się tu chyba wybrać jednego konkretnego koloru. To płyta pełna emocji i barw i ze względu na naturę tej muzyki myślę, że każdy odczuwa ją trochę inaczej - poprzez inne emocje i inne kolory. Ta różnorodność jest piękna!
MUAM: Tak, co osoba to inne odczucia. Prace nad tym albumem trwały dość długo i były na pewno niemałym wyzwaniem, ale efekty są zachwycające. Pokazaliście niemal pełne emocjonalne spektrum. Dziwnie pytać o to, jak się czuliście komponując i nagrywając ten materiał, bo tych zmian nastroju od jasności ku ciemności czy odwrotnie z pewnością było wiele. Co było tą emocjonalną inspiracją dla tej płyty?
Tom: Prace nad "Growl" były jednymi z najprzyjemniejszych i najłatwiejszych pod względem nagrywania i miksowania z dotychczasowych albumów NYOS. Masz rację, jest tu całe bogactwo emocji, bo każdy z nas odczuwał naprawdę dużo i były to różne stany. Przelaliśmy w tę muzykę wiele osobistych przemyśleń. I tak jak poprzednio nie ma tu jednej konkretnej inspiracji - koncepcja działania zespołu jest bardzo otwarta i opiera się na swobodnym poszukiwaniu i podążaniu w jakimś kierunku. Sami do końca nie wiemy dokąd dana muzyczna podróż nas zaprowadzi...
MUAM: Okej, pomyślałam, że może jakieś wydarzenie było punktem zapalnym do nagrań tego albumu, ale nie będę drążyć. Wyczytałam natomiast, że byliście na wakacjach w Wietnamie i powstała tam część materiału, np. teledysk do "Superstar". Czy ta podróż wpłynęła jakoś na ostateczny kształt albumu?
Tom: Pojechaliśmy do Wietnamu wiosną, gdy album był już nagrany, ale powstała tam wizualna strona tego materiału - wszystkie teledyski i okładki singli powstały właśnie podczas tych wspólnych wakacji. Nasz przyjaciel Pietu Arvola dopracował je później nieco i uzyskał mistrzowskie efekty!
O dziwo z Tuomasem nadal się przyjaźnimy mimo tych lat wspólnych podróży! Nie ruszyliśmy w trasę wiosną, bo dopracowywaliśmy szczegóły, by ta premiera jesienna doszła do skutku. Zamiast koncertów postawiliśmy więc na ten wyjazd. Na muzyczną stronę albumu nie miał on wpływu, ale kto wie, może te inspiracje przełożą się na kształt kolejnej płyty :)
MUAM: Ten taniec synchroniczny wspaniale łączy się z muzyką, to niemal idealne połączenie. Jak go uchwyciliście? To była jakaś wyjątkowa okazja, święto?
Tom: Mieliśmy sporo szczęścia i dobre wyczucie czasu - miałem nadzieję, że uda nam się uchwycić właśnie coś takiego. Takie tańce są w Wietnamie na porządku dziennym. Odbywają się takie sesje ulicznego tańca grupowego. Akurat podczas spaceru trafiliśmy na właściwy moment.
MUAM: Growl to bardzo dynamiczny materiał, bardzo bogaty pod względem brzmienia i mocno nasycony pomysłami, które oddają realia, w którym żyjemy. Czuję, że został zbudowany z takich malutkich fragmentów, jak krótkie informacje, które docierają do nas każdego dnia. W przeciwieństwie do tego, co otrzymujemy na co dzień, Wy połączyliście te cząstki w ciekawą całość.
Tom: Dzięki. W sumie tak, można tę płytę tak opisać... Staramy się pozwolić muzyce na płytach płynąć i układać się w opowieść tak naturalnie jak się da. To bardzo organiczny proces, ale dbamy też o to, by opowieść była spójna.
MUAM: Niedługo ruszacie w kolejną koncertową trasę. Czy macie jakieś wymarzone miejsce, w które chcielibyście wyruszyć i zagrać tam kilka koncertów?
Tom: Chcielibyśmy dotrzeć wszędzie tam, gdzie dotąd nie byliśmy! Fantastycznie byłoby zagrać gdzieś w Azji, w Stanach Zjednoczonych i w Kanadzie, może w Nowej Zelandii. Podróżowanie daje nam dużo przestrzeni do oddechu, ulgi od codzienności. Co więcej z roku na rok utwierdza nas w przekonaniu, że im więcej podróżujesz, tym więcej spotykasz ludzi i okazuje się, że więcej nas wszystkich łączy niż dzieli. Mamy naprawdę wiele wspólnego, co jest niezwykle cenne szczególnie w obecnych czasach!
MUAM: W ramach NYOS podróżujecie już razem od ponad 10 lat. Co zmieniło się w zespole przez ten czas (poza tym, że jak wspominaliście poprzednio pijecie mniej kawy ;) ). Jak się czujecie razem po tylu wspólnych doświadczeniach?
Tom: Nie jestem pewien, czy naprawdę pijemy jej mniej :) Raczej więcej! Czujemy się świetnie. Oczywiście, każda premiera albumu niesie ze sobą momenty niepewności, a nawet stresu, bo to zawsze dość nienaturalne, żeby się tak bardzo starać, żeby „sprzedać” swoją sztukę, a zwłaszcza w dzisiejszych czasach, przebicie się przez to może być naprawdę trudne… ale kiedy już wsiądziemy do vana i ruszymy w trasę, to zawsze jest to świetna zabawa i coś, co sprawia nam ogromną przyjemność.
MUAM: Nie martw się, album jest naprawdę świetny i na pewno przyniesie wielu ludziom dużo radości! Nie trzymam dłużej. Dzięki za Twój czas i wszystkiego dobrego!

A mixture of genres, unique music style, technical precision, emotional contrasts, palette of colours and personal experience - that's the art created by Finnish NYOS, which might have been familiar to you, if you check this website quite regularly for a few years.
Guitarist Tom Brooke and drummer Tuomas Kainulainen after more than a decade together in a band still find the energy to surprise the listener with the new incredible ideas. The instrumental duo from Jyväskylä is back with a new colourful story. Would you like to hear a rainbow? Check "Growl", but first of all look into this little interview - short story this time, but concrete and coherent.
Między Uchem A Mózgiem: When I hear NYOS, I see a rainbow. I’ve asked about synesthesia in our
previous interview, so a different perspective this time – how do you
feel, which colour is associated with the new album the most?
Tom Brooke: That’s
cool. Honestly – I think rainbow (I know it’s not a colour!) is
definitely the most fitting. There defiinitely isn’t just one. The album
is full of emotions and colours for us, and given the nature of the
music, I guess it brings different moods and colours for everbody, and
that’s great.
MUAM: It took a while to record Growl and it was a
challenge for you, however the results are truly incredible. It’s a
full emotional spectrum. Is strange to ask how did you feel during the
process of composing the album, but the must be some mood changes from
darkness to light and the other way round. What was the inspiration for
this album emotionally?
Tom: Actually – the recording of Growl was one of the most fun and simple recording and mixing experiences we’ve had with NYOS. But thanks a lot! Yes, it is definitely a very emotionally charged album, I think both of us were feeling a lot, the world as well of personal things - and poured a lot of that emotion into the record. Again I would say it is never one specific, typable thing that served as an inspiration with this band – the whole concept is really to be open with where we go what we put into it…
MUAM: As I’ve read in the announcement of the single, you went on a band holiday to Vietnam. Could you tell more about this trip? You’ve recorded some material to „Superstar” video there. Did this travel also have impact on the sound of the album or the final result of the release?
Tom: Sooo the album
was already recorded when we went to Vietnam in Spring, but it is true
we had a hoiday there together (we are also actually still friends even
after all these years of touring together!). Due to the album being
released later in the year and jam packed schedules all-round, we didn’t
end up touring this spring, so we decided to make this trip instead –
all the videos and single covers were captured there (before being
masterfully manipulated by our friend Pietu Arvola) so it definitely
influenced the visual side of things. But soundwise, not at all – maybe
the next one! :D
MUAM: This synchronic dance in the video matches the music perfectly. Was it a special ocacsion, a celebration of something?
Tom: This
was just a matter of good luck and timing – I was hoping hard to catch a
moment like this. Apparently these are really common there in Vietnam
(the group street dancing sessions), so it was a perfect moment to
capture.
MUAM: Growl is a dynamic,
sonically complex record what somehow relates also to the times we live
in. It seems like it’s made of small pieces matched together, somehow
as pieces of short information we receive every day, often chaotic. The
difference is that it’s all coherent and you’ve found a way to put them
all into a story. What do you think?
Tom: Thanks…. Yeah, you could
definitely describe it like that… we do let the albums flow and come
together as organically as we can (but always do try to keep it somehow
flowing and coherant)
MUAM: NYOS is going on another tour really soon! Is there a particular, dream place for you, you’d like to travel to and play some concerts there?
Tom: Would love to tour basically everywhere that we haven’t! Some asian shows would be fantastic, US & Canada too, Austraia, New Zealand… touring is such a relief and the more, and further you travel, the more you find that people have so much more in common than what divides us… which is especially important in these Times!
MUAM: It’s even more than a decade of
your journey as NYOS now. What’s changed in a band among this period of
time (apart from the fact that you drink less coffee now 😊 )? How do
you feel in a band now, after those 11 years?
Tom: Hahah not sure where you got the info that we drink less coffee now? Probably drink more. Feeling good , of course every album release brings it’s own moments of apprehension, and even stress as it is always quite an unnatural thing to push hard to ‘sell’ your art and especially in these times, it can be really difficult to cut through … but once we sit in the van and hit the road, it is always a great time and something we enjoy doing immensely.
